Leash rules for dogs expand to county
HANCOCK COUNTY — Local officials recently passed an ordinance that will allow county employees to issue fines to pet owners whose dogs are caught running loose.
The Hancock County Board of Commissioners this week OK’d measures that give employees from Greenfield-Hancock Animal Management the authority to issue fines to pet owners whose dogs wander off their properties without a leash.
Previously, employees could fine pet owners in Greenfield but not outside city limits; this ordinance brings the rest of the county up to the same standards.
Under the ordinance, pet owners are subject to a $50 fine for the first violation. Fees increase by $50 for subsequent offenses before topping out at $2,500.
