Elizabeth Jane Stockton Hill, 88, Brownsburg, formerly of Greenfield and Indianapolis, died Wednesday, March 17, 2016. She had been in declining health and passed away in her sleep at home.
Mrs. Hill was born in Missouri on Jan. 5, 1928, and she spent her youth in Kerrville, Texas, and considered that her hometown. She moved to Indianapolis in the late 1940s to live with her sister and care for her young niece. She stayed in the area the rest of her life, marrying the love of her life, Leo E. Hill, on Sept. 3, 1950, and raising two sons.
Mrs. Hill worked at Indianapolis Power & Light Co. on Monument Circle for several years in the 1950s and early 1960s. She loved classical music – Chopin was her favorite – and she took up piano lessons in the 1970s, so she could learn to play his works herself. She rarely played in public, but she would sit at her piano for hours at home, playing her favorite selections over and over.
In the 1980s, she began offering lessons out of her home in southeastern Hancock County. She taught a number of children the basics of piano, and the Sunday recitals, she sponsored at Shiloh Christian Church allowed her students to show off their new skills for approving parents and grandparents.
She also enjoyed sewing, quilting and gardening.
Mrs. Hill was a devout Christian who rarely missed services. She most recently attended Trader’s Point Church of Christ and formerly was a longtime member of Burge Terrace Baptist Church, Post Road Christian Church and East 38thStreet Christian Church.
She is survived by her sons, David L. (Paula Jarrett) Hill of New Palestine and Edward J. (Christina) Hill of Brownsburg; grandchildren, Ian, Cathlyn and Liam Hill of Brownsburg; sisters, Josephine Hoot, Mary Stockton and Elinor Stockton, all of Texas and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo E. Hill, in 2012 and a granddaughter, Ashlyn Grace Hill, in 2001.
