Crash on U.S. 40 injures 2

HANCOCK COUNTY — Police are investigating a Friday afternoon crash along U.S. 40 that left two women injured.

The accident occurred just after 2 p.m. near the intersection of County Road 675E and U.S. 40. when two cars traveling in the eastbound right-hand lane collided, police said.

Investigators believe Lora Deiwert of Dunreith rear-ended a vehicle driven by Mary Powers of Charlottesville.

Powers’ car had slowed for an unknown reason, witnesses told police.

Powers’ car careened off the side of the highway and came to rest in a ditch, police said.

Deiwert was taken by medical helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital. Powers was taken to Hancock Regional Hospital for treatment. The victims’ conditions were not known at press time.

The county’s Fatal Accident Crash Team was called to investigate. The eastbound lanes of U.S. 40 between county roads 600E and 675E were closed for several hours while crews cleared the roadway.
