Donations funneling in for new statue of Riley

GREENFIELD — Community members raising money to pay for a new statue of James Whitcomb Riley in Hancock County are getting closer to reaching their goal of $40,000 to $45,000.

The Riley Old Home Society, the friends group of the James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home and Museum, recently voted to donate $5,000 to the effort.

The city plans to place the statue of Riley sitting on a bench outside of the James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home and Museum.

The project already has the support of $15,000 from the Hancock County Tourism Commission, $5,000 from the Hancock County Visitors Bureau and $9,500 from Greenfield Parks and Recreation.
