Interstate 70 suicide victim identified

HENRY COUNTY — Officials have identified the man who fatally shot himself in front of two police officers Monday afternoon during a traffic stop on westbound Interstate 70.

Richard J. Mcelecar of Columbus, Ohio, died from a gunshot to the head near the 130 mile marker, according to the Henry County Sheriff’s Department.

Mcelecar was pulled over while driving west on I-70 after another driver called 911 saying a motorist was speeding and possibly intoxicated, police said. Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Nick Ernstes was one of the officers involved with the traffic stop.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the death, officials said.
