Thomas E. Woodward, 63, passed away on Sunday evening June 7, 2015, at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield, Indiana.  A son of Max Thomas and Phyllis (Wallace) Woodward, Tom was born in New Castle, Indiana on Sept. 7, 1951.

He was raised and lived most of his life in the Straughn community before moving to Greenfield in 2010. A graduate of Straughn High School with the class of 1969, he received his Bachelors Degree in English Education from Indiana University- Bloomington in 1973 and a Masters Degree in Administration from Ball State University.

He began his teaching career at Carthage Middle School and retired in 2009 from Tri High School in Henry County after a total of 36 years as an educator. Tom was an English Teacher and nurtured his passion of words and reading by working as a Sports Writer for the Courier Times newspaper  for over 20 years. Tom was a “people person” and enjoyed spending time with his students and friends outside of the classroom by coaching girl’s basketball and track, boy’s football, announcing at sporting events and being the academic sponsor for the Senior class and the National Honor Society.

Tom is survived by his mother; wife, of 40 years, the former Cathy Wright. They were married in Carthage on May 31, 1975; daughter, Christine M. (Brian) Moline of Milan; two granddaughters, Ava and Morgan; sister, Sandy (Jack) Myers of Filmore and two nephews, Matthew Tibbs and Joe Myers.

Tom was preceded in death by his father, on Sept. 19, 1992 and his sister, Jeri Lou Tibbs on April 16, 2013.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the start of the funeral service at 7 p.m. on Friday June 12, 2015, at the Erlewein Mortuary- 1484 West U.S. Hwy. 40 in Greenfield, In. 46140.
