Cougars name new volleyball head coach

Greenfield-Central High School has hired Deena Batton as the new volleyball varsity head coach.

Batton, a former assistant, replaces Kim Wildman, who resigned.

Originally from Morristown and a University of Indianapolis graduate, Batton is a resource teacher at Greenfield Intermediate School.

Greenfield-Central star earns all-conference

Greenfield-Central graduate and Franklin College baseball senior Seth Powers capped his collegiate career by earning All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Powers led the pitching staff with a 4-3 record and 4.30 earned run average. The right-hander also was top on the team with 54 strikeouts. He tossed two complete games in his eight starts in 2015. Powers concluded his four-year career ranked second in school history with 224 career strikeouts.

Eastern Hancock grad honored for efforts

Eastern Hancock graduate and Franklin College softball sophomore was recognized by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference for a standout 2015 season.

Blevins led Franklin with five home runs and was tied for fourth in the HCAC with 28 runs batted in. The first baseman batted .367 and had a team-high .663 slugging percentage. Blevins recorded 36 hits, including 17 going for extra bases.

Greenfield-Central plans girls basketball camp

The Greenfield-Central girls basketball camp for players in incoming kindergarten to Grade 8 will be June 1 to 4 at the high school fieldhouse.

Cost is $40, which includes a basketball, T-shirt and instructional emphasis on fundamentals.

Camp times are 8 to 9 a.m. (kindergarten to Grade 2); 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. (Grades 3 to 5); and 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. (Grades 6 to 8).

High school schedules checks, physicals

Greenfield-Central High School will host wellness checks and athletics physicals for students entering Grades 7 to 12 on May 20 at Parkway Medical Center, 300 Boyd Ave., Greenfield.

Students should sign up for a 15-minute time slot in the high school athletics office. Parents of junior high students can call the high school athletics office at 317-462-9195, ext. 2, to register.
