What’s ahead in boys basketball

A glance at tonight’s area boys basketball games (7:30 p.m. varsity starts).

Pendleton Heights (11-4, 4-0 HHC) at Greenfield-Central (6-10, 4-1 HHC)

Pendleton Heights (85.17 Sagarin Rating) is a big favorite against Hoosier Heritage rival Greenfield-Central (69.44).

A victory would put the Cougars in prime position to capture at least a share of their first league crown since 2004. It also would end an 11-game losing streak against the Arabians.

Cougars Kirill Schoellman and Tate Hall have been sharpshooters from beyond the arc the past three games. In those contests, they are 18-of-38 (47 percent).

Yorktown (11-4, 2-2 HHC) at New Palestine (8-6, 3-1 HHC)

New Palestine (75.02 Sagarin Rating) is a slim favorite over Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Yorktown (73.83).

The Dragons lead the HHC in scoring (71.4 ppg), while the Tigers own the league’s top defense (40.3 ppg allowed).

New Palestine senior Ben Farley has been rolling as of late. After averaging 5.2 points in the Dragons’ first nine games, he has scored double-digit points in three of the past four games, averaging 11.5 points in that span.

Connersville (9-7) at Mt. Vernon (8-5)

Mt. Vernon (78.87 Sagarin Rating) is a slight favorite against Sectional 9 foe Connersville (78.29).

Despite a potent offense, Mt. Vernon (62.7 ppg) might struggle to find points against Connersville, the state’s third-ranked defense (40.00 ppg allowed).

If the Marauders’ Michael Thompson continues at his current pace, he’ll be the first Hancock County player to average at least 10 points, five rebounds and four assists per game since Eastern Hancock’s Victor Vincz in 2011-12.
