Betty Lou (Thomas) Hunter, 89, of Greenfield, passed away Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015, at Golden Living Centers Brandywine.  She was born on July 23, 1925, in Terre Haute, Ind. She was the daughter of Raymond E. and Ernestine (Mullen) Thomas.

She graduated from Blackhawk High School and received her Bachelor Degree in Education from Indiana State Teacher’s College in 1943. She married Gerald Ray Hunter on Oct. 21, 1945 in Blackhawk, Ind.

Betty worked as a teacher in Illinois for several years before moving to New Palestine Schools where she worked until retiring in 1980. Mrs. Hunter attended Post Road Christian Church, Shiloh Christian Church, and Grace Presbyterian Church. She also volunteered at Hancock Regional Hospital and the polling booths. Betty adored spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting, cooking, baking, candle making, and Bible studies.

Betty is survived by her children, Yelonda Lou (Richard) McCullough of Durham, N.C., Tom (Karen) Hunter of Anderson, Ind., Melodie (Daniel) Gilbert of Indianapolis, and David Hunter of Orange Park, Fla.; ten grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond E. and Ernestine (Mullen) Thomas; husband, Gerald Ray Hunter; and birth father, Oliver Lewis Boyll.

Visitation will be held from 3 until 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, 2015, at Blackhawk Community Church, 12655 Indiana 159, Pimento, IN 47866 with viewing one hour prior to the service. Pastor Jeff Lee will be officiating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Cemetery in Farmersburg, Ind.
