John R. Highsmith, 78, of New Palestine, passed away Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at Hancock Regional Hospital. He was born on March 26, 1936, in Birds, Ill., as the son of John Highsmith and Mary (Ralston) Doran. He graduated from Ben Davis High School.
He worked for Western Electric in Indianapolis and Oklahoma City for 38 years as a supervisor and section chief. He also worked for USAC, Indy Racing League, and The Indianapolis Motor Speedway as an observer where he worked over 100 Indy racing events in the US and Japan.
John is survived by his sons, Mike W. Highsmith and Mark (Cheryl) A. Highsmith both of New Palestine; brother, Ed (Judy) Boyer of Indianapolis; and three grandchildren, Tyler, Shane and Sarah.
A Memorial Visitation will be held from 11 until 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A Memorial Service will be held immediately following the visitation. Chaplain Russ Jarvis will be officiating. Burial will follow at New Palestine Cemetery in New Palestine.
