Shirley M. (Strothman) Harter, 97, of Greenfield, passed away Monday, Aug. 18, 2014. She was born on May 21, 1917, in Franklin County as the daughter of Theodore J. and Hazel M. (Flynn) Strothman.

She graduated from Centerville High School in 1935. She married Richard W. “Bud” Harter on Dec. 24, 1936, in Richmond, Ind.

She was a musician for 50 years playing the piano and organ at Erlewein Mortuary and various nursing homes and churches. Mrs. Harter was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge #558 where she was a 50 year member and UAW Local #111. She was also a former member of the Melody Masters for 15 years.

Shirley is survived by her son, Richard (Becky) Harter of Indianapolis; daughter, Linda J. (Steve) Nelson of Knightstown; eight grandchildren, Denice, Diane, Jennifer, Lori, Joni, Tony, Stacey and Steve Jr.; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard W. “Bud” Harter; parents, Theodore J. and Hazel M. (Flynn) Strothman; daughter, Rosalie Owen; and brother, Glenn S. Strothman.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, .at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140.  A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, at 11 a.m. also at the mortuary. Pastor Mike Hopper will be officiating. Burial will follow at Washington Park East in Indianapolis.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to Faith United Methodist Church, 328 N. Swope Street, Greenfield, Indiana 46140 or envelopes will be available at the mortuary.
