Norman Gale Murnan, 79, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Shelbyville, passed away March 28, 2013. Born on March 14, 1934, in Fountaintown, Ind., he was the son of Ernest T. and Inez F. (Johnson) Murnan.
Norman graduated from Morristown H.S. in 1952. Norman was a Staff Sargent and Radio Intercept Operator for the USAF, and served in the Korean War. He worked as an owner/ operator for Murnan Auto Service, was Sheriff of Shelby County from 1971-1978 and he also worked at Allied Fidelity Insurance from 1978-1983. Norman served as an Adult Protective Services Investigator for Shelby, Johnson and Hancock counties for 12 years, retiring in 2002.
Norman was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Venice, Fla. He was also the past president and a life time member of Indiana Sheriff's Assn., Venice Isle Estates Homeowner Board of Directors, American Legion, Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, & a retired member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Norman was a natural problem solver who loved tinkering and repairing cars,trucks, scooters, boats, and just about anything that needed fixing. Family and friends considered him a "Jack of all Trades".
Norman is survived by his wife, Janice K. (Barlow) Murnan, whom he married on Aug. 2, 1953; his four children, Scott T. Murnan of Waldron, Sheryl D. (Gregory) Dill of Indianapolis, Shelley G. (Kristopher) Gies of Greenwood, and Shad R. Murnan of Shelbyville; sister, Doris Sebastian Giliatte of Greenfield; 10 grandchildren, Shaun, Seth and Silas Murnan, Eric and Andrew Dill, Breelyn (Dill) Finegan, Adam and Nicholas Baker, Stefanie (Baker) Orzechowicz, and Isabel Gies; 15 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m., on Friday, April 5, 2013, at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 6, 2013, at the funeral home. Rev. Carl Ewick will be officiating and burial will follow at Fountaintown Cemetery in Fountaintown, where there will be a military graveside service conducted by local veterans organizations.
