Harry H. Smith, 83, of Greenfield, passed away on March 8, 2012, at Hancock Regional Hospice in Greenfield. Born on May 25, 1928, in Lee, Ind., he was the son of Howard and Goldie (Kessler) Smith.

Harry married Patricia A. Sheeley on Dec. 23, 1953. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from the University of Arkansas in 1954. He was the previous owner/publisher of the Hancock County Advertiser and the owner/publisher of the Indy East News, later merging it with the Ad News. In his retirement years, he worked for the DNR as a Naturalist @ Lake Monroe, Ft. Benjamin Harrison and McCormick’s Creek. He also spent several years working as a substitute teacher for the Ellettsville and Spencer School systems.

Mr. Smith was a very active member and elder of the Greenfield Christian Church. He also previously attended First Presbyterian Church of Greenfield and Shiloh Wesley United Methodist Church of Spencer, Indiana. He also enjoyed Bird-watching, story-telling and was a former member of the Lilly Bass Club.

Surviving him are his children; Chris D. (Mary) Smith of Indianapolis, Carla D. (Randy) Abbott of Greenfield, Tami A. (Breck) Sparks of Newburgh, and Traci J. (Kevin) Scott of Greenfield; siblings, Lois Jean Norris of Elwood and Pat Thomas of Colorado Springs, Colorado; grandchildren; Carmen, Arielle, Gregory, Julie, Katie, Tyler, Bryn, Breck, Bruce, Brandon and Brian; twelve great-grandchildren; and also the nine Slate children.

 Preceeding him in death were parents; wife; and siblings, Dewey, Ethel, Mel and Zoe.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, March 12, 2012, at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. at the mortuary. Pastor Brian Nelson will be officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hancock Regional Hospice or to Greenfield Christian Church.
