Melba Hadley, age 77, of Greenfield, passed away after a long illness on Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, at Springhurst Health Campus, surrounded by her loving husband and family who will miss her greatly. She was born on Oct. 2, 1934, in Mt. Carmel, Ill., and graduated from Mt. Carmel High School then Locklear Business College. She worked for prominent attorneys in Mt. Carmel before her marriage to Darby Hadley on July 4, 1954. While her husband attended Purdue, she went on to acquire the position of secretary to the Dean of Women at the university. She was an avid tennis player and enjoyed music as well as playing the piano and flute with her daughters. She loved cooking and raising her family. She had grandchildren and great-grandchildren that she was lucky enough to be involved with day to day.

Melba had been a member of the Greenfield Christian Church for 40 years. She was a member of the U&I Home Ec Group and loved their meetings and outings.

Surviving her are her husband, Darby A. Hadley of Greenfield; daughters, Holly (Mike) Wagoner, and Amanda Hadley, both of Greenfield; son, Matthew Hadley of Greenfield; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and brother, Norman (Carol) Chapman of San Fransisco, Calif.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Leroy and Viva Chapman.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at 5 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield. Visitation be on Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the mortuary.
