Harold Y. “Shorty” Bell, age 86, of Fortville, died on Aug. 27, 2011. He was born on March 23, 1925, in Logan County, Ky.

Harold served in the U.S. Navy for eight years, where he was known as “Shorty” to his crewmates aboard the USS Randall in WWII and then Korea. From 1952, he was employed as a meat cutter for Standard Grocery until his retirement in 1987. Afterward, he was quite active on the homefront as a beloved brother, uncle to 18, husband, father, and grandfather who shared his skills of gardening, carpentry, and car repair skills with many in the community.

Surviving him are his wife of 61 years, Marjorie (Weaver) Bell; children, Harold Steven (Bev) Bell, Kandace A. Bell, Richard Randall (Karen) Bell, Merry J. (Rich) Bees, and Kristina L. (Chris) Dickey; grandchildren, Suzanne (Drew) Bees Flamion, Megan Elizabeth Bees, Hannah Bees, Grant Dickey, Katharine Elizabeth Dickey, Caroline Dickey, Mathilda Bell, and Christian Harold Bell; and sister, Mary Elizabeth “Lip” Johnson of Saginaw, Mich.
