House District 53 grid: Ethan Lawson, R

Briefly explain your top three priorities for your first year of office, if elected

My priorities come from conversations with thousands of neighbors at their doors:

1. To counter Biden-Harris inflation and policies, Indiana must model fiscal responsibility and protect our rights.

2. With our communities growing rapidly, we must support first responders and preserve community character.

3. Deadly fentanyl entering Indiana means we must improve addiction treatment and support Indiana National Guard securing the southern border.

How do you plan to address education in the state?

Supporting excellent learning outcomes for all students must be our mission. We need to protect our children, empower parents, and invest in giving students every career advantage so they’re prepared to pursue their dreams, whether that’s going to college, working in skilled trades, serving in the military, or all the above. I’ll continue staying connected with local educators and parents.

What changes, if any, would you make to Indiana’s property tax system?

Knocking on doors and talking with Hancock and Madison county neighbors, I’ve heard from people, especially seniors and those on fixed incomes, about the pain caused recently by property taxes, worsened by the high costs caused by Biden-Harris inflation. We must have low taxes that are predictable to ensure that none of us are priced out of our homes.

How do you plan to address housing as it relates to homeownership?

Ensuring homeownership is within reach is vital. Unfortunately, it’s impacted by national inflation. It’s also supply and demand, and there’s a lot of demand here, which means the quality of local life is attractive. One way the state can help is by ensuring that regulations don’t overburden people or excessively increase the cost of new homes while maintaining safety standards.

How do you plan to address housing as it relates to renters?

My wife Holly and I rented in Greenfield before we moved into our home near Greenfield, and we’re keenly aware of the inflation-driven cost and availability. Having a proactive comprehensive local plan that includes all types of housing is key to addressing cost and availability, and working with our local leaders in Hancock and Madison counties will be a priority.
