HANCOCK COUNTY — Officials with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department say an inmate has died at the county jail. In a release, officials identified the person as Joe Willie Davis, 52, of Indianapolis.

The release details that, at approximately 6:47 a.m. Thursday, officials with the Hancock County Jail responded to a medical emergency in a single-person cell.

Public Information Officer for the Sheriff’s Department Captain Robert Harris said in the release that Davis was found unresponsive when jail officers arrived and attempted to serve Davis his breakfast tray for the day.

Harris noted that jail officers immediately called medical personnel and attempted lifesaving measures on Davis. However, attempts to revive Davis were not successful, and he was pronounced dead at 7:33 a.m.

Further investigation into the death of Davis will be conducted, including an autopsy, Harris said. Officials say that investigators do not suspect any type of foul play surrounding the death at this time.

Davis had not been an inmate long in the Hancock County Jail. Arrest records show that he was taken into the jail for a charge of probation order violation Monday, Oct. 7.

Court records show that he had a case in Hancock County Superior Court 2 dealing with operating a vehicle while intoxicated in 2021 and that the case was closed via a plea agreement in July of 2022 and that a warrant was issued for his arrest on Oct. 8 for a probation violation.

Court records show a fact-finding hearing for that violation was slated for Thursday, Nov. 14.
