Editor’s note: Just in time for summer break, Greenfield-Central High School students learned about grilling burgers and personalizing them in a Burger Wars competition. Here, Janelle Keusch, family and consumer sciences teacher, shares about the event.

Daily Reporter: What was Burger Wars?

Janelle Keusch: Burger wars was May 10 and 11; six classes of Principles of Culinary participated, about 125 students. The standard we were covering was to demonstrate a variety of cooking methods, including grilling. Students were given a plain burger patty and were tasked with selecting bread, toppings, etc. They also needed to name their creation.

DR: Who were the judges and what did they do?

JK: Judges included administrators, teachers, and other support staff in the high school. They tasted a sample of all six burgers in each class and voted for the best tasting, the best plated, and the most creative name.

DR: How did the idea come about?

JK: This is not the first time for burger wars, we have held this competition in our classes for at least the last 5 years if not longer. The original idea came from a FACS teacher resource group. The major change is moving it from our advanced nutrition class to the principles of culinary course.

DR: What do you hope students took away from the experience?

JK: I hope students enjoyed the friendly competition, will remember proper safety and sanitation, correct internal temperatures of foods, and not be afraid to try something new.
