Youth triathlon/duathlon set for June 11

GREENFIELD – The second annual Youth Triathlon/Duathlon will be June 11 in Riley Park and registration is open now.

The event is open for children up to age 14 and a duathlon is available for those that don’t want to swim. For children 10 and under, the triathlon includes a 100-meter swim, 1.5 mile bike and half-mile run. For children 11-14 the event doubles each distance. Awards will be given to all participants, with medals for top performers in each age group.

School supply drive underway

MCCORDSVILLE – A school supply drive for next school year is already starting up. Blue Angel Connect is collecting school supplies for a backpack giveaway for the 2023-24 school year. The backpacks and supplies wll be given to Hancock County elementary school students who would otherwise struggle to purchase them. Visit blueangelconnect.org for a link to the wish list to purchase items online; the items will be sent directly to Blue Angel Connect to be organized and distributed. The drive will continue through July 7.

Free Family Fun series coming up

GREENFIELD – Hancock 4 Kids has announced its Free Family Fun Summer Series.

The first event is the seventh annual Superhero 5K and Kids Dash. The event will be June 10 at the Hancock County Courthouse Plaza and include a free kids dash for children in preschool through fourth grade and free sidewalk chalk at, bubbles, yard games and photo opportunities with superheroes like Mr. Incredible, Elsa and Belle. Adults and older children can register for the Superhero 5K with prizes for top finishers. The 5K is a fundraiser for the organization; for pricing and registration, visit hancock4kids.org.

The second event in the series is a free picnic in the park, set for 6:30 p.m. July 13 at Riley Park. There will be free hot dogs, games and a scavenger hunt with prizes.

The third event will be the organization’s annual backpack and school supplies giveaway. This year the event will be in conjunction with the Hancock County Community Night at the Hancock County Fairgrounds from 5-8 p.m. July 19. For updates and more information, visit hancock4kids.org.

Tea party coming up

GREENFIELD – Registration is open for the Pixy Tea Party.

The traditional event at the James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home and Museum is scheduled for 1 p.m. June 25. Cost is $10 for children 3-15 and $20 for ages 16 and older. To register, visit parks.greenfieldin.org.

Free food available for children this summer

GREENFIELD – Greenfield-Central Schools will once again have free meals available to all children 18 and younger this summer. Students do not have to attend G-C schools in order to receive free food.

Breakfast offered daily at Greenfield-Central High School and Greenfield Central Junior High School includes Pop Tarts, cereal, cereal bars, juice and milk; meals will be each weekday in June and July from 7:30-8:45 a.m.

Lunch will include an alternating menu each weekday in June and July at the high school, junior high and the concession stand at the Kathy Dowling Aquatic Center at Riley Park. The concession stand site will be open 10:45-11:45 a.m. daily; the junior high is 11 a.m. to noon, and the high school is 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
