GREENFIELD — State finalists from last season looking to make another trip, and others looking to make it for the first time, both cleared their first hurdle at Thursday’s Greenfield-Central Boys Track and Field Sectional.

Greenfield-Central earned a top three spot, and an automatic bid to next week’s regional in 11 of the 16 events. New Palestine saw advancements in four.

The Cougars placed second with 107 points, and the Dragons came in fifth with 62 points.

Warren Central won the team title with a score of 155.5. Franklin Central (103), Roncalli (72), Triton Central (31), Indianapolis Lutheran (31), Shelbyville (27), Morristown (9), Beech Grove (8.5) and Indianapolis Scecina (8) rounded out the team scores.

“We were able to set a few school records tonight,” Greenfield-Central head coach Aaron Smith said. “I think most people did pretty well.”

Setting those school records were two relay teams, and sprinter Ian Jack.

Jack’s individual record came in the 200-meter dash, where he ran a time of 22.33 seconds to finish in second place.

He was a part of both the 400 and 1600 relays that set school records as well. The 400 relay’s school record time of 42.96 seconds earned them third, and the 1600 relay’s time of 3:23.31 was good enough for second place.

Along with Jack, the 400 team included Aaron Lee, Austin Kincer and Kirk Knecht. Lee and Jack were joined by Griffen Wheeler and Michael Runions in the 1600.

Both the Cougars and Dragons had two individual sectional champions on the night.

A state qualifier from a season ago, Elliot Ryba, got some revenge at the sectional meet where he placed fifth last season. This time around, he cleared 6-feet, 9-inches for first place.

“His best height at that time last year was 6-2 or 6-3. This year he was a little disappointed in indoor performances until we got to those later meets, and he was right back around his state height,” Smith said of Ryba’s progression over the past year. “He ended up setting the school record, and county record this year. He was a little disappointed tonight because he was going for 6-11, but to be back up at 6-9 and be consistent is huge going forward.”

The other sectional champion for Greenfield-Central was a runner-up from last season. Christopher Ross beat the 3200 field by 10 seconds with a time of 9:36.00.

“Last year from cross country on he had a knee issue, so his training wasn’t anywhere near where it needed to be. He was pretty mentally strong through that time, but this year he has been 100 percent healthy and working very hard,” Smith said. “Since he got second last year, he’s been thinking about this one. We have a wall of champions for sectional champs, so he gets his name on that wall now, so he’s pretty excited about that.”

For New Palestine, a state finalist in the pole vault last season, Jack Rossell cleared a height of 14-feet, 3-inches to defend his sectional title.

James O’Dell grabbed the Dragons’ second sectional championship in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.59.

Along with those two, Cody Crawmer advanced in the 800-meter with a third-place finish, Sage Halter was second to teammate Rossell in the pole vault, and the Dragons 3200 relay team was a runner-up.

Joining the Cougars winners were a plethora of runner-ups.

Wheeler was second in the 800, Carter Crouch in the 1600, Cash Looper in the 110 hurdles, and Knecht in the long jump.

The Cougars 3200 relay team placed third, along with Reese Hill in the shot put.

The qualifiers will compete in next Thursday’s regional at Greenfield-Central.
