Drey Jameson

Staff report

It’s an Opening Day first for Greenfield’s Kyle Gibson and Drey Jameson.

In his 11th Major League Baseball season, Gibson will begin his first opener as a member of the Baltimore Orioles.

Jameson, who made his MLB debut as a September call-up by the Arizona Diamondbacks last year, is on the Opening Day roster for the first time in his professional career.

Major League Baseball begins its regular season Thursday with 15 games scheduled to be played across the country.

Along with making his debut as an Oriole, it was announced last Friday that Gibson would be Baltimore’s Opening Day starting pitcher.

Gibson is slated to take the mound at Fenway Park when the Orioles begin their regular season with a road game against the Boston Red Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 2:10 p.m. Corey Kluber is the scheduled starter for the BoSox.

Gibson was a first-round draft choice by the Minnesota Twins in the 2009 draft. He spent seven seasons with Minnesota before becoming a member of the Texas Rangers in 2020. In the 2021 season, Gibson was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies.

He was 10-8 with a 5.05 earned run average with the Phils last year and, for the first time in his career, pitched in the World Series.

A 35-year old, right-handed pitcher, Gibson elected free agency in November and was signed by the Orioles on December 5, 2022.

He went 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA during spring training. He pitched 18.2 innings in five outings, all starts, striking out 15.

Jameson, also a right-handed pitcher, was the 34th overall pick of the 2019 draft by Arizona.

He was outstanding in four starts late last season. Jameson went 3-0 with a 1.48 ERA. He fanned 24 in 24.1 innings pitched.

It was announced Sunday that Jameson would be part of the D-backs active roster. He will begin the season as a bullpen pitcher.

Jameson made six appearances in the spring, five were starts. He went 2-1 with a 7.53 ERA. He fanned 19 in 14.1 innings pitched.

The Diamondbacks open the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The game, to be played at Dodger Stadium, is scheduled to start at 10:10 p.m. ET.

Gibson graduated from Greenfield-Central High School in 2006. He went on to play collegiately at the University of Missouri. Jameson graduated from G-CHS in 2017 and later pitched at Ball State University.
