New York City and Boston will be the site for national competitions for two Greenfield-Central student athletes this weekend.

Greenfield-Central junior high school distance runner Josie Kinnaman will be competing in an indoor track and field national meet Friday in the Bronx at the Armory Indoor Track facility.

Greenfield-Central High School high jumper Elliot Ryba will be in Boston competing in a similar event.

Both qualified in recent indoor meets.

Kinnaman is an eighth-grader at the junior high. She qualified in the 1-mile run. She’ll be competing in the NIKE Indoor Nationals. She qualified with a time of 5-minutes, 27-seconds.

Ryba will be at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. He cleared 6-feet, 4-inches to earn a spot. Ryba placed 10th in the state in last year’s outdoor IHSAA Boys Track and Field State Finals.

Two high school runners qualified, 800-meter runner Griffen Wheeler, and sprinter Savannah Lake, in the 60-meter dash, along with junior high distance runner Braylon Mumaugh, but they are not competing in this week’s events due to registrations being filled.

Mumaugh, an eighth-grader, qualified for the 1-mile run with a time of 5:12, three seconds quicker than the qualifying standard. He will compete in the USA Track and Field Youth nationals in Louisville on March 17.

“I think this is the first time junior highers have done indoor meets like this,” Greenfield-Central junior high coach Chris Tatom said. “They’ve worked their tails off to make it to this point. I’m pretty proud of Josie and Braylon for making it. They put the work in over the winter and it’s good to see them reaping the awards.

“I’m really proud of these kids. They’ve all earned it.”
