Mt. Vernon defeated host New Castle 57-34 Tuesday to secure a share of the Hoosier Heritage Conference girls basketball title.

The Marauders improved to 6-0 in HHC games and have a chance to become outright league winners Thursday at Delta (6-13, 1-5). Pendleton Heights is 6-1 in HHC games.

Mt. Vernon (16-6, 6-0) was led by Kanyonrae Kenny with 19 points and six steals. Easton Wampler had 17 points and Kaitlyn Laffey contribute nine. Khloe Patterson had seven points and six rebounds.

The win was Mt. Vernon’s fourth in a row.

New Castle dropped to 0-21 and 0-7 in conference games.

New Pal wins in overtime

After winning on a late comeback in the final seconds on Saturday against Southport, New Palestine won another exciting nail-biter Tuesday.

In overtime, the Dragons won at Greensburg 67-59.

Tied 58-58, New Palestine outscored Greensburg 9-1 in the extra session.

New Pal senior Isabella Gizzi scored 24 points, including all nine of the Dragons’ points in the extra session. For the game, Gizzi hit 12 of 17 free throws.

Sadey Hughbanks added 15 points. Vivian Miller scored 14.

The Dragons are 11-10 on the season and finish regular season and Hoosier Heritage Conference play Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. game at home against Yorktown.

It’s Senior Night for lone Dragon senior Gizzi, the program’s all-time leading scorer.

Tuesday’s win was New Palestine’s third straight. Greensburg dropped to 12-9.
