Keep books in schools’ libraries

To the Editor:

It’s about time somebody stood up for NOT censoring books and for keeping books in school libraries! I commend you! We don’t have to bow down to every separate group in America! We must offer reading material that is free and open to our students — just as this editorial states. Books are the base of education.

I taught high school English for 34 for years, and I battled censorship from some unenlightened parents many times — even of my gifted students. Of course, most of the time, the objector had not read the book in question. He or she had only “heard that it was objectionable.” Those people made it really hard for me to remain professional as I spoke to them. Sometimes, I offered an alternative selection: War and Peace, but usually I was able to show the value of the “objectionable” book to the parent’s satisfaction.

Again, I applaud you for publishing this editorial. I hope that your readers take it seriously.
