INDIANAPOLIS — Officials with the Indiana State Police say they arrested and charged a Greenfield man in connection with an incident involving shots being fired from one vehicle to another on I-65 near Washington Street in Indianapolis earlier this week.

Justin McGuire, 33, Greenfield, was arrested in Indianapolis Tuesday night on preliminary charges of three counts of criminal recklessness after officials say he fired at least one shot into another car occupied by an adult and two children, state police said in a press release. The charge carries up to six years in prison.

Official charges were filed late this week, Friday, Dec. 2. McGuire is facing a Level 5 felony count of criminal recklessness — shots fired, in Marion County Court 20. The court set a $30,000 surety bond for his release.

The incident happened around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29. That’s when Indiana State Police dispatchers say they received a 911 call about shots being fired. Officials were told the incident involved the driver of a gray or silver Ram pickup firing at a Jeep Patriot during a road rage encounter.

Troopers located the suspect vehicle a short time later near Holt Road and I-70 where the driver, McGuire, was detained, officials said.

Indiana State Police detectives were called to the scene and a preliminary investigation led them to believe McGuire was driving the Ram pickup and became engaged in a road rage incident, state police said. During the incident, McGuire allegedly fired at least one shot at the Jeep, striking the Jeep, which officials say was occupied by an adult driver and two children.

The driver of the Jeep drove to a safe location and immediately notified the state police.

A look into McGuire’s records in Hancock County show he was charged with operating without a license in 2018 in Hancock County Superior Court 2, but nothing more serious than the traffic offense.

This interstate shooting investigation marks the 61st shooting incident for Troopers at the Indianapolis Post on Indianapolis area interstates, officials said. Last year they investigated a total of 65 interstate shootings in the Indianapolis area.
