Philip M. Powell Sr., age 81, of Fortville, passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at his home. He was born in Monticello, Kentucky on November 28, 1940 to Margarite (Ingram) and Ovid Powell. Philip graduated from Arsenal Tech High School in 1960 and proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1963. He married Gloria Sue (Workman) in Byrdstown, Tennessee on May 4, 1958.

For over 30 years, he worked at Chrysler in Indianapolis as a millwright and then worked for Hancock County as a building inspector. Philip was a member of the Harley Motorcycle Club of Indianapolis, Fortville American Legion and Greenfield Carving Club. He enjoyed spending most of his time outdoors – camping, hiking, and barrel racing with his horse, Nightmare. Philip loved traveling, taking his kids on adventures, exploring mountains and caves and going on motorcycle trips. Most of all, he loved to be with his family.

Philip is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Sue Powell; children, Tammie Powell Hodges (Brian), Lori Kendall (Steve), and Phil Powell Jr. (Lisa); grandchildren, Devin Griffith (Mandi), Chad Griffith (Kayla), Shane Griffith (Sarah), Zeke Werden (Jessica), Shelby Earley (Logan), Philip Powell III, Dustin Powell, Chase Powell, Wyatt Powell, Colton Powell, Heath Powell, and Amber Smith (Josh); 15 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Terry Powell, Ted Powell and Mahala Boring. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margarite and Ovid; and his brother, Earl Powell.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held at the mortuary on Monday, November 28, 2022, at noon with viewing one hour prior to the service. Brenda Earley will be officiating.
