Spauldings lead Royals to opening night win

Senior twins Jacob Spaulding and Silas Spaulding combined for 41 to lead Eastern Hancock’s boys basketball team to a 78-44 victory at Centerville in both team’s season-opener Wednesday.

Jacob Spaulding scored 21 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range. Silas Spaulding hit four 3s and had 20 points.

Edric Miller dropped in 15 points, including a pair of 3s.

The Royals led by 21 points, 40-19, by halftime.

Off the bench, Luke Morris contributed eight points and five steals. Grant Gray had a team-high five rebounds and seven points.

Eastern Hancock (1-0) is back in action Dec. 2, on the road, against Hancock County rival New Palestine (1-0).

Girls basketball

Royals remain unbeaten in MEC

Grace Stapleton hit four first-quarter 3-pointers and finished with seven treys for the game in Eastern Hancock’s 56-22 Mid-Eastern Conference victory over visiting Shenandoah on Tuesday.

Stapleton finished with 24 points. The Royals led 19-2 after the opening quarter and extended the margin to 25, 33-8, by halftime.

Sammie Bolding and Makenzie O’Neal had 10 points apiece.

Eastern Hancock is 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the MEC. Shenandoah dropped to 2-4 and 0-2.

The Royals are back in action Saturday in another MEC matchup at Wapahani (3-0, 2-0).

Swimming

Mt. Vernon opens with wins

Mt. Vernon’s boys and girls swimming and diving teams opened their seasons Tuesday with victories over Richmond High School.

At the Mt. Vernon pool, the Marauder girls defeated the Red Devils 132-52. The MV boys won 102-78.

The teams are back in action Tuesday, at home, against Warren Central.
