GREENFIELD — Hundreds of trick-or-treaters made their way through the halls of Greenfield-Central High School on Monday, Oct. 24, where junior high and high school students from various clubs passed out candy from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The not-so-spooky charity event has been hosted by the high school’s student council for roughly the past 15 years. While the event is free, donations are gladly accepted.

Students from 17 different organizations took part, raising $775 for Riley Children’s Hospital.

“We always have such a great turnout and the generosity of the community is amazing,” said student council advisor Sarah McCall.

The high school students have just as much fun as the younger kids, she said, with members of each club creating a candy station of their own, often reflecting the organization’s purpose.

“Some groups went all out decorating in a Halloween theme but you could also find games, photo opportunities, face painting, a maze, and of course costumed students to hand out plenty of candy,” said McCall.

Hundreds of families participated this year, with a steady line of trick-or-treaters winding through the first floor halls for the first hour.

“The community and our students both love this event,” said McCall, who has led the student council for the past 13 years.

“It is a safe environment for the little ones to trick-or-treat, and with it being indoors we never have to worry about the weather. So even if Halloween turns out to be a cold rainy night and not everyone goes out trick-or-treating, at least they still had the opportunity to get dressed up in their costumes and join us here the week before,” she said.

Her favorite part watching is the interactions between the junior high and high school students and all young children who come through — typically Greenfield-Central students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

“Our students love setting up and coming up with fun ideas for the trick-or-treaters to make sure that they truly have a wonderful evening, and of course we get to raise money for Riley Children’s Hospital, which is just another reason this is such a great event,” she said.
