The Rev. Daren Huber, pastor of New Palestine Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

New pastor comes to New Palestine Christian

NEW PALESTINE — The Rev. Daren Huber is the new pastor of New Palestine Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

He earned his master of divinity in 2021 from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis. He also has worked in logistics since 1998 for The Bentcil Co., his wife’s family promotional products company.

Huber and his wife, Amy, have been married for 31 years.

“He brings some vitality and excitement and plans to go a little bit further,” said longtime member and elder John Kottlowski. “That’s what we needed.”

Concert is Wednesday at Christ Presbyterian

McCORDSVILLE — In a monthly dinner series, Christ Presbyterian Church is offering meals with a side helping of family fun.

The series kicked off in September. It continues at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the church, 7879 Carroll Road.

The church’s Presbyterian Women will serve dinner, followed by music from Kelleen Strutz from 6:45-7:30. Strutz is a pianist and vocalist who has performed at the Jazz Kitchen and as a guest soloist for Indiana Wind Symphony. She will play and sing some songs and invite those gathered to sing along on a tune or two. The Rev. Gretchen Schneider, pastor of the church, thinks it will be “a nice break for people to breathe.”

The church received a grant from Indiana Center for Congregations. Schneider said the church had been concentrating on hospitality and welcoming, but then COVID hit. The church was having services online for months before returning to in-person worship on Easter 2021.

Now it’s returning to its previous aim to invite, “to provide a space for people just to be,” she said. Grant funds have helped the church refurbish the outdoor basketball goal and clear weeds from the playground, and the church has launched the monthly series. It’s built with family fun activities yet meant to also be accessible for various households, including single people.

“It’s to welcome the neighbors and give them a space … with no expectation of membership or anything,” Schneider said.

Upcoming second Wednesday programs include:

Nov. 9: Dinner at 6 p.m., followed at 6:45 p.m. by pumpkin decorating. “Halloween may be over,” reads a program description from the church, “but you still need that centerpiece, porch decoration, or hostess gift! Pumpkin decorating for the whole family!”

Dec. 14: Dinner at 6 p.m., followed at 6:45 p.m. by Christmas-themed craft stations. “Make an ornament, write a letter to Santa, decorate a cookie or two, get a family picture taken, and more!” reads a description from the church.

Thanksgiving dinner set in Fortville

FORTVILLE — Blazer 88 Foundation plans to serve a traditional Thanksgiving dinner from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 24 at Fortville Church of the Nazarene.

The foundation seeks to honor the late Charles “Chuck” Theobald IV’s legacy of helping fellow veterans. The organization works to meet specific needs for veterans, such as counseling or accessibility for veterans with disabilities. The work has included helping a veteran see a counselor, sponsoring children at a camp for those who’ve lost parents in wartime, or helping a veteran family have Christmas gifts for the children.

The Thanksgiving dinner is available to veterans and non-veterans alike. It’s not a fundraiser; organizers say it’s simply meant to offer community and also build awareness of the organization and its work.

“We’re hoping anyone who’s in need … anyone who feels they don’t have a place to go on Thanksgiving … anyone who doesn’t have money to do a big Thanksgiving meal” will feel welcome and come, said Tiffany Ward, who with husband Josh is organizing the dinner. “The expectation is just for people to show up.”

cture taken, and more!” reads a description from the church.
