FISHERS -Taking on an opponent they played less than two weeks ago, and defeated 6-1, 6-2, Eastern Hancock’s Wennens brothers had a tougher matchup the second time around.

Eastern Hancock’s No. 1 doubles combo of Bryce and Myles Wennen had defeated the Pendleton Heights pair of Cole Bubenzer and Mark Nielsen handily in both teams final regular season match prior to last week’s Mt. Vernon Sectional of the IHSAA Boys Tennis Team State Tournament.

They met again Tuesday in the doubles sectional tournament at Fishers High School.

After losing set one 6-4, they stormed back in front of a loud crowd of Eastern Hancock supporters to defeat the Arabians 6-4 and 6-2 in the final two sets.

“Me and my brother just started off a little bit slow, so we just needed to pick up the energy in those last two sets,” Bryce Wennen said. “Maybe having played them recently we went in thinking that we were going to clobber them, but when we played them in the regular season, we had a bunch of energy, and tonight we just started off a bit too slow.”

The Wennens advance and will play a yet to be determined opponent.

Hancock County was represented by two qualifiers in the sectional round of the individual tournament, taking place at Fishers Tuesday.

In singles action, New Palestine’s Moses Haynes lost 6-2, 6-2 to Fishers Reese Knoderer, the No. 4 ranked player in the state.

“It wasn’t the draw that we were looking for, but it’s great experience going forward,” New Palestine head coach Jean Graham said.
