Pairings announced for volleyball tournament

The Indiana High School Athletic Association announced matchups for the 51st Annual IHSAA Volleyball State Tournament with an online pairings show Sunday evening.

Area schools found out opponents. Later this week, dates and times will be determined.

In eight-team Class 4A Sectional 9, hosted by Yorktown, Hancock County and Hoosier Heritage Conference rivals New Palestine (21-3) and Greenfield-Central (9-15) meet in the tournament’s first match. It will be followed by a contest between Muncie Central (8-11) and Pendleton Heights (19-9).

Mt. Vernon (10-15) will play in Match 3 against Anderson (1-11). Match 4 will have Richmond (4-16) against Yorktown (26-2), ranked No. 3 in Class 4A and winners of the HHC.

The first semifinal, Match 5, will be between the winners of Match 1 and Match 2. Match 6 will be between winners of Match 3 and Match 4.

Traditionally, the first two matches have been played on the Tuesday of sectional week, with Match 3 and Match 4 taking place on Thursday. Semifinals and the championship are usually played on Saturday.

Eastern Hancock will host Class 2A Sectional 42.

The five-team tournament begins with Match 1 between Irvington (3-5) and Riverside (0-7). Match 2 has the host Royals (16-12) taking on Triton Central (16-7). Match 3 will be between Indianapolis Scecina (23-4) and the winners of Match 1.

Scecina is ranked No. 3 in Class 2A.

Sectional play begins on Tuesday, Oct. 11, and continues through Saturday, Oct. 15.

Sectional champions will advance to a four-team regional on Saturday Oct. 22, to be followed by a single semi-state round on Saturday, Oct. 29. The four state championship matches at Ball State University’s Worthen Arena are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5.

New Palestine wins Richmond Invite

New Palestine won all three of its matches by straight sets to take the title at the Richmond Invitational Saturday.

The Dragons (21-3) won 2-0 matches against Franklin County (25-12, 25-12) and Winchester (25-14, 25-11) to advance to the championship against host Richmond.

New Palestine won the final match 25-14, 25-10.

The Dragons were scheduled to play Monday at home against Noblesville. They have an HHC match Tuesday at home against Shelbyville.

G-C swept at Guerin

Greenfield-Central lost 3-0 to host Guerin Catholic and 3-1 to Fishers Saturday in the Guerin Catholic Invitational.

Against Guerin, the Cougars lost by set scores of 25-14, 25-22, 25-21.

Mya Grigsby led the G-C attack with 13 kills. Rilee Roland had nine. Harper Holden had four blocks. Libero Finnley Greene led in digs with 11. Roland had 10. Setter Makenna Rankins had 26 assists.

Against Fishers, the Cougars were defeated by set scores of 18-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-19.

Roland and Grigsby had nine kills each. Katie Muegge had five service aces and three blocks.

Grigsby had 13 digs, followed by Roland with 11 and Greene with 10. Rankins had 16 assists.

Boys cross country

Markley places second at MEC meet

Eastern Hancock sophomore Preston Markley placed second and junior teammate Brandon Metz finished third at the Mid-Eastern Conference Championships hosted Saturday by Blue River Valley High School.

Markley finished his 5K in 17:02.4. Metz crossed the line in 17:28.3.

The Royals finished fifth in the meet with 97 points. Wapahani won with 31. It was a tight battle for the next few spots. Cowan was second with 82, followed by Blue River Valley 86 and Monroe Central 88.

Wapahani’s Nick Cook won the race with a time of 16:23.7.

For the Royals, following Markley and Metz, Caden Powers was 31st in 19:42. Andrew Metz placed 33rd in 19:51.7. John Henry Gray was 34th in 20:02.9.
