Greenfield-Central finished second at the Neal Charske Firebird Invitational in Ohio Saturday. The only team to beat the Cougars, Springboro, is ranked No. 3 in Ohio in the state’s coaches poll. Eastern Hancock’s Preston Markley broke the school record for a 5K run in winning the Heritage Classic hosted by Hauser High School Saturday.

Markley won the race in 16:25, nearly 30 seconds better than the old mark set by Bill Fletcher in 1990 (16:54).

The Royals won the team event with 36 points. All five Eastern Hancock runners set new personal bests. Brandon Metz placed fourth in 17:15. John Henry Gray was 11th in 17:52. Caden Powers (18:39) and Andrew Metz (18:55) placed 16th and 19th, respectively.

The Royals travel to Blue River Valley High School Saturday for the Mid-Eastern Conference meet.

Mt. Vernon second, NP 11th

Mt. Vernon was second and New Palestine placed 11th, of 15 teams, in the Black Division 5K race at the Shelbyville Golden Bear Invitational Saturday.

Mt. Vernon’s Tristan Trevino was second in 15:50.70. Marauder Ahmed Saleh was 10th in 16:28.80.

Other Marauder scorers included Colin Strachman (21, 16:52.30), Landon Willis (25, 17:00.60) and Austin Baugh (28, 17:10).

Jake Cooper led New Pal, placing 52nd in 17:55.60. He was followed by Gavin Smith in 63rd (18:18.70), Jacob Collins 80th (18:48.70), Sam Ragsdale 83rd (19:03) and Isaac Poetz 86th (19:09.70).

Carmel won with 44 points. Mt. Vernon had 81, six less than Columbus North. The Dragons scored 311.

New Albany’s Aidan Lord was the individual champion with a time of 15:19.90.

Mt. Vernon and New Palestine will compete on the same course this Saturday for the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship.

Cougars second in Ohio

Greenfield-Central’s boys cross country team finished second at the Neal Charske Firebird Invitational in Kettering, Ohio, Saturday.

The Cougars finished second with 107 points. The winning team, Springboro, ranked No. 3 in Ohio, scored 57.

Griffen Wheeler was seventh with a time of 16:11. It was his personal best and puts him No. 7 on the school’s all-time list.

Liam Brinkruff ran a 16:25 to place ninth. Chris Ross was 14th with a season-best run of 16:33. Luke Haffner was 23rd finishing in 17:09, Carter Crouch placed 59th in 17:50.

The Cougars will compete at the Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet Saturday in Shelbyville.

Girls cross country

Cougars win Ohio invitational

Greenfield-Central was first in a 14-team field and won the Neal Charske Fairfield Firebird Invitational in Kettering, Ohio, Saturday.

Reagan Crouch (21:35.5) and Lexie Copeland (21:40.5) were third and fourth, respectively.

Kendall Barrett (22:53.6) placed 19th. Emma Capen (23:04.5) was 24th and Ashlyn Devlin (25:16.2) finished 69th.

The Cougars will compete at the Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet Saturday in Shelbyville.

Marauders sixth, Dragons 12th

Led by a third-place finish from freshman Hannah Hauser, Mt. Vernon placed sixth of 12 teams in the Black Division 5K race at the Shelbyville Golden Bear Invitational Saturday.

New Palestine placed 12th.

For the Marauders, following Hauser, who clocked in at 19:33, Emma Gale was 17th in 20:25.50.

Other Mt. Vernon scorers were Julia Iserloth (52, 21:34.10), Melinda Cornelius (56, 21:38.70), and Kenydi Russell (67, 22:12.80).

For New Palestine, Courtney Study led the way by finishing 34th (21:03.50).

She was followed by Lexi Baynes (66, 22:08.80), Cami Massari (72, 22:32.60), Edie Schwarb (78, 22:53) and Heidi Bloomer (87, 23:23.50).

Carmel won with 44 points. Mt. Vernon scored 170. New Palestine finished with 283.

Mt. Vernon and New Palestine will compete on the same course this Saturday for the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship.

Volleyball

Cougars finish second

Greenfield-Central was the runner-up in the Cougar Challenge held at G-C Saturday.

The Cougars lost 2-1 to Pike in the championship match. Set scores were 22-25, 25-17, 15-10.

G-C is 9-11 on the season.

Harper Holden, Rilee Roland, Finnley Greene and Mya Grigsby were selected to the all-tournament team.

Against Pike, Grigsby had 11 digs, Roland had nine kills and setter Makenna Rankins had 27 assists.

To get to the championship match, earlier in the day, G-C beat Edinburgh and Warren Central by scores of 2-0.

Against Edinburgh, the Cougars won 25-20, 25-21. Grigsby had 14 kills. Roland had 15 digs and Rankins had 31 assists.

Against the Warriors, Greenfield-Central won 25-9, 25-12. Roland had nine kills. Grigsby had nine digs and Rankins had 22 assists.

Greenfield-Central was scheduled to play at Southport Monday and is slated to host Pendleton Heights Thursday.

Royals go 2-2

Eastern Hancock is 16-11 on the season after going 2-2 at the Eastern Hancock Invitational Saturday.

The Royals beat Beech Grove (2-0) and Indian Creek (2-1) and lost to Southwood (2-0) and Daleville (2-0).

Set scores against Beech Grove were, 25-10, 25-19. Sydney Hayes and Ellie Meyer had six kills each. Hayes had 11 assists. Brooklyn Willis had 12 digs.

In the win over Indian Creek, the Royals won by scores of 17-25, 25-11, 18-16.

Meyer had 10 kills. Hayes had 19 assists and 11 digs.

Versus Southwood, EH lost 25-12, 25-9. Willis had seven digs.

In the match against Daleville, the Royals lost 25-13, 25-12. Kaitlyn Lowes had three kills. Hayes had nine digs and nine assists.

The Royals were scheduled to play Daleville again, on the road, Monday. The following match is next Monday, Oct. 3. at home against Triton Central.

Girls soccer

Cougars beat Oldenburg

Greenfield-Central defeated Oldenburg Academy 3-1 at G-C Saturday.

On an assist from Tessa Joyner, Cora Bishop put the Cougars up 1-0. The Twisters scored to tie the match. It was 1-1 at halftime.

Sarah Contreraz and Paige McCarley assisted Carly Means for the go-ahead goal. Contreraz to McCarley connected for the third G-C goal.

Hannah Skene saved a PK late in the match. Oldenburg Academy came into the contest ranked No. 10 in the state in Class 1A.

The Cougars were scheduled to host Class 2A Hamilton Heights Monday. They’ll host Heritage Christian Thursday.

Boys soccer

New Pal defeats Connersville

New Palestine downed visiting Connersville 2-0 Saturday.

The Dragons are 8-6 on the season.

Elliott Canova had both New Palestine goals. Cohen Wintin had an assist.

The Dragons are scheduled to host Franklin today.
