For the second time this week, New Palestine won a Heritage Conference five-set thriller.

On Tuesday, the Dragons came back from a two-set deficit to defeat Delta 3-2.

On Thursday, they hung on after a two-set lead.

The Dragons improved to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in the HHC with a 3-2 victory over visiting Pendleton Heights.

New Palestine won by set scores of 25-14, 25-21, 21-25, 16-25, 20-18.

Lauren Wilson had 27 kills and nine digs. Setter Isabella Gizzi had 46 assists, 19 digs and six kills. Libero Honour Mallory had 25 digs. Defensive specialist Azure Flagle had 18 digs and two aces. Middle blocker Reagan Kleiman had 13 kills. Kyndra Monteith added nine digs.

“A great win against a very tough opponent,” New Palestine assistant coach Jamie Morris said.

After a non-conference match at Mooresville Monday, the Dragons have a key HHC road contest Thursday at New Castle.

Cougars defeat Shelbyville

Mya Grigsby had 20 kills and eight digs and setter Makenna Rankins had 41 assists in Greenfield-Central’s 3-1 victory at Shelbyville Thursday.

The Cougars won by set scores of 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 25-17.

Greenfield-Central improved to 6-9 overall and 1-4 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.

The Cougars travel to Plainfield Monday.

Marauders fall to Trojans

Mt. Vernon lost 3-0 to visiting New Castle Thursday.

Set scores were 25-12, 25-15, 25-22.

Sophia Damer led the Mt. Vernon attack with eight kills. Libby Gee-Weiler had 26 digs. Setter Ava Whitmore had 22 assists and 13 digs. Aubry Dowling had 10 digs.

The Marauders are 5-12 on the season and 1-4 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.

The Trojans improved to 11-3 and 3-1 in the conference.

Mt. Vernon travels to a tournament at Leo High School today.

Royals win five-setter

Eastern Hancock improved to 11-9 on the year with a 3-2 victory at Southwestern (Shelby) Thursday.

The Royals won by set scores of 18-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22, 15-9.

Eastern will play host to Cowan in a Mid-Eastern Conference match Monday.

Boys tennis

MV defeats NC

Mt. Vernon improved to 13-2 overall and 4-1 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 4-1 victory over visiting New Castle Thursday.

The Marauders swept the three singles matches.

No. 1 Adam Koon was a 6-3, 6-3 winner. At No. 2, Manny Downs won 6-1, 6-2. No. 3 Tate Cougill picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

In doubles action, Bryndan Wylie and Robbie Moore won 4-6, 7-5, and 10-7 in a super tie-breaker.

At No. 2 doubles, Max Orelup and Matthew Jones lost 6-3, 6-0.

The Marauders welcome New Palestine on Wednesday.

New Pal beats Triton

New Palestine won 3-2 over visiting Triton Central Thursday.

In singles matches, No. 1 Moses Haynes won 6-3, 6-2. No. 2 Arjomand Khokhar won 6-1, 6-2.

The Dragons got a win from the No. 1 doubles team of Max Havel and Will Hahn, 7-6, 6-4.

New Palestine hosts Richmond Monday.

Cougars defeat Alexandria

Greenfield-Central defeated host Alexandria 5-0 Thursday.

No. 1 singles player CJ Michalek won quickly, 6-0, 6-0. Chris Long picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2. Matthew Hyre also won handily, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles.

In doubles play, the No. 1 team of Caden Robertson and Luke Sitzman won 6-3, 7-6 (2). The No. 2 team of Alex Michalek and Michael Kwiatkowski won 6-1, 6-2.

The Cougars travel to Whiteland Monday.

Girls golf

Wherry shoots career-best round

Greenfield-Central’s Sydnie Wherry shot a career-best nine-hole round of one-under-par 35 and was medalist in the Cougars 208-217 win at Shelbyville Thursday.

Ella Neill shot 55. Emma Jo Mohr and Kynsey Hasty shot 58 and 60, respectively.

It was the final regular season match before Monday’s New Palestine Sectional at Hawk’s Tail of Greenfield golf course.

Eastern finishes regular season

In the final match before Monday’s New Palestine Sectional, Eastern Hancock’s Emily Grant shot a 56 at Centerville Thursday.

Abby Bolding had a 66 and Lyla Hancock finished with a 68.
