Today’s Hancock County Boys Tennis Tournament will be played at New Palestine Junior High School.

The New Palestine High School athletic department made the announcement Thursday noting traffic and safety concerns with other events happening near the high school’s varsity tennis courts.

The tournament, which includes New Palestine, Eastern Hancock, Greenfield-Central and Mt. Vernon is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.

New Palestine is the defending champion.

Mt. Vernon picks up two more wins

Mt. Vernon picked up a pair of wins Wednesday and Thursday, defeating Lawrence North 5-0 Wednesday and Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Shelbyville 3-2 Thursday.

Against Lawrence North, the Marauders lost just eight games. No. 1 singles player Adam Koon won 6-0, 6-1. No. 2 Manny Downs won 6-0, 6-0. Tate Cougill, at No. 3, picked up a 6-4, 6-0 victory.

In doubles, Robbie Moore and Bryndan Wylie won 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, Matthew Jones and Max Orelup had set scores of 6-2, 6-0.

At Shelbyville, the Marauders kept the traveling HHC trophy with three wins in singles.

Koon won 6-0, 6-2. Downs was victorious 6-1, 6-0 and Cougill triumphed 6-4, 6-4.

Eastern blanks Rushville

Eastern Hancock earned a 5-0 win at Rushville Wednesday.

All five wins were in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, Zeke Dixon won 6-2, 6-1. No. 2 player Luke Fletcher won 6-2, 6-2. At No. 3, Luke Schilling came out on top 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles action, Bryce Wennen and Myles Wennen won 6-0, 6-0. Peyton Stephens and Bo Dixon won 6-1, 6-2.

The Royals are 6-0 on the season.

Cougars improve to 10-2

Greenfield-Central defeated Knightstown 4-1, at home, Thursday.

CJ Michalek won a three-setter at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 0-6, 6-1.

Matthew Hyre picked up a victory at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0.

The Cougars swept the doubles matches.

At No. 1, Caden Robertson and Luke Sitzman won 6-4, 6-3. Alex Michalek and Eli Conderman won 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 3 singles, Nolan Frye dropped his match 6-1, 6-4.

Dragons sweep Bears

New Palestine defeated visiting Lawrence Central 5-0 Wednesday.

Three matches were decided by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Winners without giving up a game were No. 1 singles player Moses Haynes, No. 3 singles player Brady Torzewski and the No. 1 doubles team of Max Havel and Eli Sloan.

No. 2 singles player Arjomand Khokhar won 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Will Hahn and Joey McPike won 6-0, 6-1.

Boys cross country

G-C wins Cougarpalooza

At the lone home meet of the season at Brandywine Park, Greenfield-Central won its annual Cougarpalooza boys cross country meet Wednesday.

G-C had seven runners finish in the top eight spots and scored 16 points.

Rushville was second with 49. Roncalli scored 86 and Scecina had 140.

G-C was led by first-place finisher Griffen Wheeler, who won the 5K race in 16:49. Liam Brinkruff was second in 17:02 and Chris Ross placed third in 17:13. Luke Haffner made it four Cougars in the top four spots by finishing in 17:35.

Sam Houston placed sixth in 18:27, followed by David Wasson (18:36) and Carter Crouch (18:39).

The team runs at the Blackford Invitational today.

Girls cross country

G-C girls second at Cougarpalooza

Greenfield-Central was runner-up at the team’s lone home event, Cougarpalooza, held at Brandywine Park Wednesday.

Roncalli won with 35 points. G-C had 54, followed by Rushville (79), Warren Central (93) and Scecina (no team score).

Emaline Capen was the top Greenfield-Central runner. She placed third with a 5K time of 22:49.

Reagan Crouch finished seventh in 23:07. Lexie Copeland was eighth with an identical time of 23:07.

Kendall Barrett clocked in at 24:34 to place 17th. Rounding out the scoring runners, Ashlyn Devlin placed 19th in 24:39.

The Cougars will run today at the John Mitchell Invitational at Cascade High School.

Girls golf

Mt. Vernon Lapel, Yorktown end in three-way tie

Mt. Vernon, Lapel and Yorktown all finished with scores of 180 at Thursday’s meet held at Arrowhead Golf Course.

It was the lowest round of the season for the Marauders. Izzy VanHeel led Mt. Vernon with a 40. Natalie Miner had a personal best round of 43. Kylie Hyde had her best round, too, a 48.

On Wednesday, at Delta – on the Albany Golf Club course they will be playing today at the Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet – the Marauders lost to the Eagles 190-211.

New Pal defeats Shelbyville, Richmond

With a 182-256 victory at Hawk’s Tail of Greenfield Thursday, New Palestine improved its dual record to 9-4.

Zoe Nelson was medalist with a 42. Katie Kelley shot 44. Lily Kirchner finished with a 46 and Hanna Beller had a 50. Lauren Appleby followed with a 52.

Wednesday at Hawk’s Tail, the Dragons shot 191 to defeat Richmond, which did not have enough participants for a team score.

Beller led the Dragons with a 46. Nelson had a 47 followed by Appleby (48) and Kelley (50).

The Dragons will compete at the HHC meet today at Albany Golf Club.

G-C gets two wins

Greenfield-Central picked up a pair of wins this week, defeating Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Pendleton Heights Wednesday and Connersville and Hagerstown, in a triangular meet, Tuesday.

Against the Arabians, the Cougars won 212-216. Sydnie Wherry was medalist with a 39. Ella Neill followed with a 51. Laney Elliott finished with a 58. Tanessa O’Neal shot 62.

Earlier in the week, the team won with a 216, led by Wherry with a 42. Neill shot 50. Elliott and O’Neal finished with a 60 and 64, respectively. Connersville scored 231 and Hagerstown had a 248.

The Cougars will compete at the HHC meet today at Albany Golf Club.

Grant is low Royal

Emily Grant had the low round for Eastern Hancock in its meet versus Tri Tuesday.

Grant shot a 60. Lyla Hancock had a 68 and Abby Bolding carded a 69.

Eastern Hancock is scheduled to compete against Randolph Southern on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Volleyball

Cougars drop match to Trojans

Greenfield-Central was defeated 3-0 by visiting New Castle Thursday.

The Cougars (5-8, 0-3 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference) lost by set scores of 25-18, 25-22, 25-11.

Rilee Roland led the G-C attack with nine kills. Harper Holden had three blocks.

Finnley Greene and Mya Grigsby had 14 and 13 digs, respectively. Makenna Rankins had 23 assists.

New Castle is 10-2 and 2-0 in the HHC.

Greenfield-Central plays host to Mt. Vernon Tuesday.

Marauders defeated by Yorktown

Mt. Vernon (4-10, 0-3) suffered a 3-0 loss to visiting Yorktown (13-2, 3-0) Tuesday.

The Marauders lost by set scores of 25-9, 25-13, 25-6.

For Mt. Vernon, Alivia Morgan had six kills.

Libby Gee-Weiler, Ava Whitmore and Sierra Holverson each had nine digs. Whitmore had 13 assists.

The Marauders play host to Roncalli Monday.

EH loses MEC match to Wapahani

Eastern Hancock lost a 3-0 decision to visiting Wapahani Wednesday.

The Royals lost by set scores of 25-8, 25-9, 25-12.

Eastern Hancock (6-9, 3-2) will play today in the Indiana Deaf School Invitational.

Girls soccer

G-C evens overall, HHC records

Greenfield-Central improved to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 5-1 win over visiting Delta Wednesday.

Callie Means, Chaney Brown, Chloe Gardner, Paige McCarley and Gladys Rodriguez had goals.

Sarah Contreraz, Loren Bewley, Courtney Vaughn, Brown and McCarley each had assists.

Delta is 3-3-1 overall and 0-2 in the HHC.

The Cougars play host to Columbus North today at noon.

Boys soccer

New Pal beats Shelbyville

Cole Christopher, Brendan Tanksley and Paxton Holmes had goals for New Palestine in a 3-0 win at Shelbyville Thursday.

Tanksley and Cohen Wintin had assists.

The Dragons improved to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. The Bears are 6-3-1 and 1-1 in the HHC.

Next up for the Dragons is a road match at Lawrence North today at 11:30 a.m.
