Thacker gets offer from Volunteers


New Palestine sophomore defensive lineman Michael Thacker has received a scholarship offer from the University of Tennessee.

Thacker announced the offer on his Twitter page Tuesday.

The 6-1, 268-pound standout lineman received an offer from Ball State this summer. Thacker’s older brother, Isaiah Thacker, a wide receiver/defensive back for the Dragons, committed to Ball State in June.

Michael Thacker, in two games, has 12 tackles — including nine solos — four tackles for loss and two sacks.

As a freshman, he had 22 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.

Minch gets D-I offers

Mt. Vernon 6-3 junior basketball player Ellery Minch has received recent NCAA Division-I offers from Army West Point and Holy Cross.

The Indiana Girls Basketball organization reported the offers on its Twitter page.

Minch was a key part of Mt. Vernon’s back-to-back girls basketball sectional championship teams.

In the 2021-22 season, Minch, as a sophomore, led the 17-9 Marauders in scoring. She averaged 17.5 points per game to go with 4.9 rebounds and 1.5 steals per contest.

Gibson to start Friday

Greenfield’s Kyle Gibson is scheduled to start Friday for the Philadelphia Phillies in their game against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park.

The game starts at 10:15 p.m. ET and will be streamed exclusively on Apple TV+.

Gibson is 9-5 on the season with a 4.08 ERA.

Over the last 30 days, Gibson, in five starts, is 3-1 with a 2.30 ERA. He has struck out 30 in 31.1 innings pitched. He threw seven shutout innings in a 6-0 victory Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Phillies are in the hunt for a playoff spot. They are currently tied with the San Diego Padres for the second wildcard spot.

They are 10 games behind the New York Mets and in third place in the Eastern Division.

Jameson one step away

Former Greenfield-Central and Ball State standout Drey Jameson has gone seven innings or more in four of his last six starts for the Class AAA Reno Aces.

Jameson, a first-round pick and No. 34 overall choice in the 2019 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, was called up to the Aces in May. He started the season with the Class AA Amarillo Sod Poodles.

In four games for Amarillo, Jameson went 2-1 with a 2.41 earned run average. In 18.2 innings, he struck out 23, gave up 13 hits and walked four.

After a slow start with the AAA club, he is 3-3 over his last six starts. Overall, for Reno, Jameson is 5-10 with a 6.66 ERA.

On Aug. 21 against the Salt Lake Bees, Jameson went seven innings, gave up just three hits, struck out four and walked two.
