Bicycle rider killed in fatal car crash

HANCOCK COUNTY — A county teenager riding her bicycle along a country road was struck and killed in a fatal one-car accident Wednesday night, officials from the McCordsville Police Department said. The accident happened around 9 p.m. when the teenager was struck by a car in the 6100 block of County Road West 800N in McCordsville.

The teenager has been identified as Haylee Scott, 19, McCordsville.

Scott was struck while riding her bicycle on County Road West 800N, just west of County Road North 600W (Mount Comfort Road), Sergeant Aaron Watts of the McCordsville Police Department said in a release.

Officials with the McCordsville Police Department responded to the accident shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24 and said in the release the driver of the vehicle is fully cooperating with the investigation. Officials from the Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team also responded to assist in the investigation, Watts said.

According to the release, the vehicle that hit Scott was a 2016 white Nissan Altima, and the driver, whose name has yet to be released, was the only occupant. The driver of the Altima was not injured, officials said.

From what law enforcement can tell, Scott and the Altima were both traveling eastbound on County Road West 800N, approaching County Road North 600W, when the accident occurred.

Scott was transported by Vernon Township Medics to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, but later died from her injuries, officials said.

The driver of the Altima consented to a chemical test, which is standard procedure after a fatal accident, and results are still pending. The investigation of the crash is ongoing, offiicials said, and no other information can be released at this time.

The McCordsville Police Department was assisted by members of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Greenfield Police Department, Fortville Police Department, and New Palestine Police Department.
