MCCORDSVILLE – A groundbreaking ceremony for Vernon Township Fire Station 432 in McCordsville will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4 at the parking lot of the Geist Montessori School, 6058 W. 900N., McCordsville. The location is across the street from the construction grounds for the new station; Vernon Township closed on $7.1 million bonds for the new 24-hour fire station in November.

Vernon Township Trustee Florence May said in a press release that the Vernon Township board has been working on the project three years, noticing the 45.9% growth rate in the past 10 years and the ever-expanding list of new subdivisions and an upcoming town center in McCordsville.

The new station, at county roads 600 West and 900 North in McCordsville, will be near the two highest-run locations in the township: Traditions and Meijer. The new station location is north of the busy railroad tracks that split Fortville and McCordsville; long trains often stop and block multiple cross points. The existing Fortville station, which will remain open, is south of the tracks.

“The location chosen is near one of our busiest areas and will greatly improve coverage capability,” said Fire Chief Mark Elder in a press release.
