INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana State Fair kicks off this Friday, celebrating the Hoosier spirit, agricultural heritage and – this year– automotive excellence.

The 165th fair takes place at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis July 29-Aug. 21, and many Hancock County families plan to participate through exhibits and animal shows.

Here’s a look at what’s new and how to plan a trip.

N An automotive theme will celebrate “Fun at the Speed of Summer.” Look for celebrity car appearances from the Batmobile, Scooby Doo Mystery Machine and Ghostbuster Ectomobile; a classic car exhibit; science in motion exhibit and more.

N New culinary experiences await across 140 different food stands. New items this year include pickle pizza, deep-fried brownies, peach shake-ups and mint cookie milkshakes. Can’t decide which food to try? Consider the State Fair Charcuterie Board, which includes small portions of funnel cakes, corn dogs, salt water taffy, cotton candy and more. Or a State Fair Mary, a 24-ounce Bloody Mary topped with skewers of fair food treats like waffle fries, cheese curds, fried pickles and a pulled pork slider.

N New attractions this year include a stunt dog show, baby farm animal exhibit, high dive show and the USA Mullet Championships. On Opening Day this Friday, check out the State Fair Hot Air Balloon Night Glow.

N The Hoosier Lottery Grandstand schedule is full of events from a rodeo, to demolition derby to harness racing. Concerts nightly – free with the cost of the fair ticket – range from Travis Tritt to Chaka Kahn; Trace Adkins to KC and the Sunshine Band.

N Traditional favorites will return, including midway rides, the Pioneer Village and Little Hands on the Farm.

N Look for new art installations throughout this year’s fair, with photo opportunities.

N While the fair runs through Aug. 21, it is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. People are encouraged to buy tickets early to save up to 40 percent, by 11:59 p.m. today, July 28. However, discounts are available on select days.
