Doran Bennett, a 7-year old who attends Fortville Elementary School, won the state long jump competition for his age group at the USATF Indiana Junior Olympic Championships held at Manchester University last month.

FORTVILLE — Seven-year old Doran Bennett has advanced from the state competition and is headed to the regional.

A Fortville Elementary student, Bennett recently ran faster and jumped further than most of his competition in the USA Track and Field Indiana Junior Olympic Championships, held at Spartan Stadium on the campus of Manchester University, in North Manchester, on June 18.

Bennett competed in three events. He won the long jump with a personal record of 10-feet, 2 4/5-inches (3.12 meters). He placed second in the 400-meter dash and third in the 200.

His time in the 400 was 1 minute, 24.82 seconds. He had a time of 36.13 seconds in the 200.

Recently, Bennett moved from competing on a YMCA team to a USATF-sanctioned squad.

Prior to the state meet in Manchester, he had competed in four Indiana Youth Track Association meets, finishing in the top eight in all events.

The USATF Region 7 Junior Olympic Championships begin today at Little Giant Stadium at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind. The event runs until Sunday. Bennett will compete in the long jump on Saturday and running events on Sunday.

If he advances from the regional, Bennett will be eligible to compete at the 2022 USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships to be held at Sacramento (Calif.) State University’s Hornet Stadium from July 25-31.
