HANCOCK COUNTY — Two dogs scheduled to be euthanized after a vicious attack on a mail carrier were stolen from the county’s animal shelter this week following a break-in at the facility.

Amanda Dehoney, director at Greenfield Hancock Animal Management, said the two brown and white male boxers were stolen from the facility sometime between 4 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. Wednesday. A brick was thrown through a window to unlock a door to gain entry, she said.

Dehoney said the dogs were to be euthanized due to being deemed vicious under a city ordinance after attacking a mail carrier in Greenfield on April 16. She said the attack resulted in severe bodily injury.

The ordinance defines vicious animal as “Any animal that attacks, bites or injures human beings, pets, companion animals or livestock or which, because of temperament, conditioning, or training, has a known propensity to attack, bite or injure human beings, pets, companion animals or livestock as defined” under state law.

The dogs have been reported to try to attack people in the past as well, Dehoney said.

One of the dogs is around age 1 and the other is around age 8.

If spotted, people are encouraged to call animal management at 317-477-4367 or the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, which is leading the investigation, at 317-477-1147.

“I would not approach them,” Dehoney said. “They mauled this mail carrier unprovoked.”
