Event raises $6,345 for VFW

GREENFIELD — The third annual Whiskey for Warriors event, held every December by Chilly’s Liquors, raised $6,345 for VFW Post 2693.

The funds raised go toward the VFW’s efforts to help veterans and their families that are in need, as well as efforts of the Hancock County Veterans Service Office.

At its meeting earlier this month, the VFW presented a certificate of appreciation to the business.

The amount raised from ticket sales and the silent auction from the December 2021 festivities was the most in the event’s history.

Whiskey for Warriors features bourbon tastings, live music and food donated by Montana Mike’s.

Family opens CBD shop

NEW PALESTINE — A father-and-son-in-law team have opened a business selling products derived from hemp plants.

New Pal CBD sells products featuring cannabidiol, or CBD. The compound is derived from hemp plants and does not contain tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana that produces a high.

The business also offers hemp oil extract products featuring delta-8-THC, a compound similar to delta-9-THC — the compound commonly known as THC. Products with delta-8-THC are legal in Indiana.

Patrick Doerflein helped start the business after finding that delta-8-THC was more effective than prescription opioids at managing the pain from the chronic nerve damage in both of his legs that he sustained while serving in the Army.

Doerflein joined his son-in-law, Enrique “Toni” Contreras, who had an opportunity to open the store after working in the vaping industry.

New Pal CBD’s products include oils, gummies, beverages, chocolates, bath bombs, topicals like creams, and even products for pets. Most of the store’s products are grown and made in Indiana.

The shop is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
