GREENFIELD — The Martha Beckenholdt Youth Philanthropy Award opens Jan. 5, 2022. The award, named in honor of long-time Hancock County resident and philanthropist Martha Beckenholdt, recognizes a Hancock County high school junior who has contributed outstanding time, talent and energy to philanthropy. The award recipient will select a Hancock County nonprofit organization or agency to receive a $1,000 grant in his or her name, donated by the Hancock County Community Foundation. Applicants must be Hancock County high school juniors with a recommendation from a high school staff member or nonprofit organization leader located in Hancock County. Career center to host open house

NEW CASTLE — The New Castle Career Center will host an open house for high school sophomores and juniors from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 27. Students may visit any of the 17 programs offered by the New Castle Career Center. The Broadcasting Program session will be held at Knightstown High School; Health Careers will be held at Danielson Center, 300 Trojan Lane; EMT will held at 432 Broad St.; Building Trades will be held at their building site, 104 Winchester Drive; the remaining programs will be at New Castle High School, 801 Parkview Drive.

Red Kettle Campaign raises nearly $52k

GREENFIELD – The Salvation Army of Hancock County raised nearly $52,000 in the Red Kettle Campaign, according to a newsletter from the organization thanking the community for its support and volunteers for ringing bells. In total, $75,000 in assistance to local families was provided by the Salvation Army in 2021.

4-H club collecting materials for recycled picnic tables

GREENFIELD – Plastic bottle caps, lids and monetary donations are being collected to create new picnic tables for the Hancock County Fairgrounds.

The Lucky Clovers 4-H Club is collecting items to recycle to create picnic tables. Donations will be accepted from 4 to 5 p.m. Jan. 16 at Hancock County Purdue Extension, 802 Apple St., Greenfield. Donations will also be accepted at the same time Feb. 20, March 6, April 17 and May 22. Acceptable caps include milk jug, creamer, toothpaste, drink bottle, ketchup, baby food, apple sauce pouch, and shampoo. Acceptable lids include peanut butter, mayonnaise, ice cream bucket, cottage cheese, yogurt and more.
