HANCOCK COUNTY — The county added a new COVID-19 death, raising its total to 201. Its state advisory level was also downgraded to red — the most severe — for the first time in almost a year.

The latest fatality was a man age 80 or older and occurred on Jan. 4, according to information from the Indiana Department of Health.

Hancock County added 183 new novel coronavirus cases on Jan. 4. It’s been averaging nearly 140 new cases a day. The upward trend has led to the county’s COVID-19 advisory level to go from orange — the second most severe, to red — the most severe and a level it hasn’t seen since January 2021. All of Indiana’s counties are currently red or orange.

Indiana added 12,937 COVID-19 cases on Jan. 4, setting a new daily high for the pandemic. The state also added 39 new deaths between Dec. 27, 2021 and Jan. 4, 2022, bringing its total to 18,644.
