GREENFIELD — A late-night visit to a car dealership from a vehicle filled with people turned into a theft when two high-performance muscle cars were driven away.

One of the vehicles was recovered; police are still looking for the other one and the suspects.

The Greenfield Police Department is investigating the incident, which happened around 3 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15.

Chuck McMicheal, GPD’s deputy chief and public information officer, said officers were alerted to suspicious activity at Dellen Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, 2640 W. Main St., after an employee at a nearby business watched a vehicle pull into the Dellen lot. The witness saw people get out to look at a car. A few moments later, the witness said, the car’s lights came on, and the witness called 911.

A few moments after that, a total of three vehicles left the parking lot, the witness told officials.

The two vehicles stolen from the dealership were a black 2017 Dodge Charger Hellcat and an orange 2018 Dodge Charger Hellcat. The third vehicle that left the lot was the vehicle that arrived with the suspects. All three vehicles headed west on U.S. 40, McMichael said.

Officers from the New Palestine Police Department and Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department located the vehicles at U.S. 40 and Mt. Comfort Road. They observed them heading north on Mt. Comfort Road. A pursuit was initiated but terminated a few minutes later, McMichael said.

The 2018 Charger was later recovered, abandoned, in Indianapolis by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

GPD detectives are continuing to investigate the theft and will be searching the recovered vehicle for evidence. McMichael noted thefts of similar vehicles have been occurring in nearby communities

“We are working with them to identify suspects,” McMichael said of police departments in those areas.

No arrests had been made by the Daily Reporter’s deadline on Wednesday.
