GREENFIELD
Phyllis Rae (Nuckols) Spence, age 91, of Greenfield, passed away Friday, November 12, 2021 at Hancock Regional Hospital. She was born in Springfield, Illinois on February 7, 1930 to James Ray Nuckols and Helen L. (Suydan) Nuckols. She went to a one room schoolhouse through 8th grade and graduated from Auburn High School in 1947. On March 22, 1959, Phyllis married Clarence F. “Bud” Spence Jr. at Auburn United Methodist Church in Auburn, Illinois.
For over 30 years, she worked for ITT Technical Institute in Indianapolis as an administrative assistant in the president’s office. Earlier in her career, from 1952-1959, she was the administrative assistant to the Press Secretary for the Governor of Illinois. Phyllis enjoyed playing cards, reading, visiting Amish settlements, and gardening. She also enjoyed cooking and baking and was known for her Christmas fudge.
Phyllis is survived by her children, Cindy (Tim) Wardlow of Carmel and Chris (Tina) Spence of Rushville; granddaughter, Molly Wardlow of Houston, TX; and siblings, June Hamilton of Springfield, IL and James (Carolyn) Nuckols of Auburn, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Helen; and husband, Clarence.
