GREENFIELD — The annual “Fill a Truck, Fill a Pantry” event filled a lot of trucks and pantries this past weekend.

About 250 boxes of non-perishable foods were collected Saturday, Oct. 16, by the Rotary Club of Greenfield, who partnered with local Kiwanis and Sertoma clubs and the city of Greenfield for the fall food collection, held in the Greenfield Christian Church parking lot.

The food was distributed to four pantries throughout Hancock County: the Fortville Area Rescue Mission, Hancock County Food Pantry, Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen and Shirley-Wilkinson United Methodist Church Food Pantry.

“We tried to cover all corners of the county,” said lead organizer Brian Lott, a Rotarian and chief of the Greenfield Fire Territory.

Lott said the amount of food collected this year was down from previous years for a number of reasons, including the loss of 1,000 boxes typically contributed by a major donor that went to another county this year.

Donations were also impacted by this year’s food collection falling over fall break for many local families, a scheduling conflict Lott hopes to avoid next year.

Talks are already underway to enhance next year’s food drive, he said, possibly by asking local high schools to compete to see who can donate the most.
