‘Green’ marketplace planned in Cumberland

CUMBERLAND — A fall marketplace will be held at Cumberland Town Hall Square from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16. The event, hosted by Cumberland Green Collective, will feature artisans of repurposed, reused and responsible items, as well as a farmers market and Monster Dash 5K.

Costumes are encouraged at the Monster Dash 5K, with a walk at 10 a.m. and a kids race at 11 a.m. Karen Laine of “Good Bones” on HGTV will be a special guest at the event.

Libraries to host teen events

GREENFIELD — Events for teens and “tweens” will be held next week at the Hancock County Public Library. The Sugar Creek branch in New Palestine will host a pumpkin decorating event for ages 9 to 18 at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19. The main branch in Greenfield will host a Teen Pizza Month Celebration for grades 6 to 12 with a snack and pizza-inspired crafts at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21. Both branches will also have Ball jar luminary take-and-make craft kits available for teens next week.

Wilderness survival topic of workshop

GREENFIELD — Learn basic skills for surviving in the wilderness from Dylan Allison, interpretive naturalist at Fort Harrison State Park, in a Wilderness Survival workshop at the Hancock County Public Library. Allison will focus on the “big three” of shelter, water and food. Learn how to read maps and navigate with a compass; review fire-starting and fire safety; and acquire basic hunting, fishing and foraging skills. A question-and-answer session and time for hands-on activities will follow the lecture.

The event is at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25 at the main branch, 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield. Sign up at hcplibrary.org. The event is the first in the library’s new “Things You Should Know” series, where each month a new set of skills will be highlighted.

Volunteers needed to ‘wrangle’ weeds

GREENFIELD — Volunteers are needed to help eradicate invasive plants at Thornwood Nature Preserve.

The event will be 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 at the preserve, 1597 S. Morristown Pike, Greenfield.

The event is hosted by the Cooperative Invasive Species Management Association of Hancock County. Volunteers will be given instruction upon arrival. Contact Purdue Extension of Hancock County at 317-462-1113 for more.

Shrine Club meeting planned

GREENFIELD — The Hancock County Shrine Club will hold a meal and meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26 at the Hancock County Fraternal Order of Police, 400 E. Davis Road, Greenfield.
