MCCORDSVILLE — The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a death that occurred outside a home on the morning of Wednesday, June 30, from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to investigators, the victim was an adult male from Indianapolis who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest inside his car outside a house in the 6700 block of West Stansbury Boulevard. The victim was not immediately identified.

The street was temporarily condoned off as the sheriff’s department responded. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness, who called to report hearing the shot, said the man apparently had come to the house to buy a dog and that he may have had a weapon stored in his sweatpants. Detectives found a handgun in his pants.

Capt. Robert Harris, public information officer for the sheriff’s department, said the circumstances of the death were still being investigated. From what investigators have been able to determine so far, the gunshot appeared to be self-inflicted, and there was no reason to suspect a homicide, Harris said. No one else was injured in the incident.
