Memorial Day ceremonies planned in county

HANCOCK COUNTY — Local observances of Memorial Day will be held in Hancock County on Monday.

In New Palestine, American Legion Post 182 will have a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at Sugar Creek Township Park, 4161 S. County Road 700W.

The one-hour program will start at noon. The public is welcome and is encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

In Greenfield, American Legion Post 119 will hold its 64th annual Memorial Day ceremony at Park Cemetery, 621 S. State St.

The ceremony starts at 11 a.m. Greenfield Mayor Chuck Fewell will deliver remarks.

The Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard will fire a rifle salute. The VFW Auxiliary will present wreaths to commemorate the conflicts in which the county’s veterans have served.

State Road 9 remains closed near the cemetery entrance, but guests can access the entrance by crossing over State Road 9 at Tague Street or approaching from the south.

The cemetery entrance, which has been transformed into the Avenue of Flags for Memorial Day, will close at 10:45 a.m. and reopen after noon on Monday. Parking will be available starting at 9 a.m.
