PREP ROUNDUP: Cougars celebrate senior night victory

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield-Central girls tennis team celebrated senior night in style, defeating visiting Lapel 4-1 at home on Monday night.

The Cougars’ two seniors won their matches at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles led by Ali Knecht and Makayla Price, respectively.

Both are first-year tennis players, but their in-season progression was on display against the Bulldogs to help the Cougars improve their season record to 4-3.

Knecht and doubles partner Hallie Smith both won 6-4, 6-2 to secure a team point. Price and Leah Puckett teamed to win 6-1, 7-6 at two doubles.

The Cougars other wins came at No. 2 singles with Jaclyn Layton winning 6-3, 6-2, and from county champion Brianna McConnell at No. 3 singles, prevailing 6-4, 6-2.

Zoe Starks lost a competitive match at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 3-6.

“As a team, the Cougars played very well tonight,” G-C head coach Michael Turpin commented. “Every girl started and finished their matches strong.”

Dragons sweep past Bears

The New Palestine tennis team posted its first sweep of the season Friday, shutting out visiting Lawrence Central 5-0.

Abby Blachly won 6-0, 6-0, Olivia Hasenkamp won 6-0, 6-1 and Courtney Johnson 6-0, 6-1 at singles. Both doubles teams – Lucy Miller/Mia Knoop and Natalee Russell/Lily Haeberle – both won 6-0, 6-0.

The Dragons are now 4-3 on the season.

Baseball

Dragons beat Pike on senior night

The New Palestine baseball team routed Pike 11-2 Saturday for a senior day victory.

The Dragons broke the game open with a five-run third inning, then added a run in the fourth, four in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Tate Hackler pitched a complete game for the victory, allowing one earned run and three hits in seven frames. He struck out nine.

Kaiden Kirkwood led an eight-hit attack with two doubles and two RBI. Carter Stogsdill also was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Zayden Stiller hit a three-run homer. Maddox Manes and Luke Legault also homered. Espich added a hit.

The Dragons’ big third inning began with Stogsdill’s leadoff double. After back-to-back hit batters and an error loaded the bases and plated a run, a wild pitch added another. Kirkwood’s double scored two runs, and Espich’s single plated another.

In the fifth, Stiller and Manes hit back-to-back homers to left. Legault added a solo blast in the sixth. The Dragons are now 6-9 on the season.

Track and Field

Dragons take 8th at Zionsville

The New Palestine boys and girls track teams competed at Friday’s 10-team Zionsville Invitational.

The Dragon girls finished eighth with 32 points, while the boys placed ninth with 14 points. Floyd Central’s girls (95.5) and Brownsburg’s boys (126) won their respective meets.

For the Dragon boys, Richard Clevenger finished fifth in the discus (142-7). Nick Bastian finished sixth in the 100 (11.16) and long jump (20-6.75). Tucker Keevers was ninth in shot put. The Dragons also finished eighth in the 400-meter and 1,600-meter relays.

For the Dragon girls, Brenna Shaw was third in the 1,600-meter run (5:32.81) and Sydney Miller third in discus (115-6).

Kendall Mann finished sixth in the 3,200 (11:46.99). Faith Hensel was sixth in shot put (35-0.5), while Anna Ackerman was sixth in the pole vault (9-6). Lexi Baynes finished eighth in the 400 (1:03.53). The Dragons were second in the 3,200 relay and seventh in the 1,600.

Marauders finished third in Kokomo

The Mt. Vernon girls track and field team amassed 85 points to finished third during Saturday’s 97th annual Kokomo Relays.

Jayla Tremble placed second in the discus and fourth int he shot put for the Marauders. Danae Kendrex was eighth in the long jump and high jump.

Raelyn Stanfield took seventh in the high jump, while Riley Nielsen was fourth in pole vault. She finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with Anna Stanfield in fifth.

Mya Eppert took third in the 100-meter dash and was first in the shuttle hurdles with Raelyn Stanfield, Aya Renforth and Anna Stanfield.

Morgan Kille, Allie Jenson, Chloe Wingham and Alex Overshiner were fourth in the middle distance medley relay.

Eppert, Nielsen, Anaiah Garrett and Kille teamed to win the 400-meter relay. Lydia Carrell was fourth in the 1,000-yard run. Anna Stanfield, Renforth, Kindred Johnson and Emma Gasiorek were third in the ninth-grade sprint medley.

Eppert, Garrett, Overshiner and Morgan Tharp were fourth in the spring medley, while Jenson was sixth in the 3,200 and Melinda Sue Cornelius was seventh.

Marauders win Kokomo Relays

The Mt. Vernon boys track and field team continued its dominant run this season by winning the 97th annual Kokomo Relays on Saturday, nearly breaking the record for most points in the meet.

Noblesville was second, Crown Point was third and Cathedral finished fourth in the eight-team meet.

Winning for Mt. Vernon was Keagan LaBelle in the pole vault at 13-feet, 6 inches, which was his personal best. Also winning was Matt Foor in the shot put at 46-0 plus.

George Burhenn won the high hurdles and the middle distance relay and the shuttle hurdle relay. The mid distance relay included Andrew Jones, Daylon King, Tre Jones and Joseph Blagrave in 6:04. The shuttle included Joe Bowsher, Burhenn, Andres Langston and Andrew Heffner.

The freshmen sprint medley relay also won with Dominic Barnett, Colin Strachman and Tre Jones and Andres Langston.

Caden Wildey put up the biggest fight of the day after taking fifth in the long jump. He took third in the 100 and was second in the 400 relay.
